Dan Pauli
..
...Dan
began studying marimba in 1984 with Dr. Dumisani Maraire
in Portland Oregon. At that time he also began building Marimbas and was
co-founder of the band Boka Marimba, which is still playing today. Over
the last two decades Dan has studied with the great Zimbabwean musicians
including Ephat Mujuru, Stella Chiweshe, and others.
........Dan played for five years with Boka
Marimba, until he began to play with Dr. Maraire in the band Minanzi
III. This group toured the country playing nightclubs and colleges up
to the time when Dr. Maraire returned to Zimbabwe to live. Dan appears
with Dr. Maraire on the Kronos Quartet recording “Pieces of Africa”.
After Dr. Maraire’s departure, Dan played with the Seattle based
Marimba band, Anzanga and then with former members of Minanzi Three
and members of the Seattle band Kutamba in a group called Chavuvhu.
........In 1992 Dan moved to Santa Fe New
Mexico and began teaching Shona style Marimba music. Soon a student band
was formed called Mhondoro which began to perform around New Mexico, spreading
African Marimba music in this area for the first time.
........In 1996, Dan founded the band Jaka,
using the name Dr. Maraire used to refer to his hosho playing. Dan co-wrote
and co-arranged the first self-titled CD with his childhood friend Peter
Swing, and wrote the second album titled “Magic”. Jaka was
Dan’s first attempt to blend Zimbabwean music with contemporary
Western music.
...... In 2001 after a short re-location
to Boulder Colorado, Dan left Jaka to return to Santa Fe and a beautiful
new son…Aedan. Dan began teaching again in Santa Fe and performing
Mbira with Joe LaViolette until their collaboration lead to the formation
of Common Thread who presently tours and performs locally. Dan still performs
Mbira solo as well as Mbira, Marimba, and percussion and vocals with his
present bank Mukwa.
